P22 Special Project:
P22 Music Text Composition Generator
The P22 Music Text Composition Generator allows any text to be converted into a musical composition. This composition is displayed in musical notation and simultaneously generated as a midi file. The P22 Music Composition Font was proposed in 1997 to the John Cage Trust as an accompaniment to the John Cage text font based on the handwriting of the composer. The idea was basic and simple-every letter of the alphabet was assigned to a note on a scale. This would allow for any text to be converted into musical notation. The idea was rejected by the John Cage Trust, however the John Cage Silence font based on his famous 4'33" composition was accepted and continues to be offered for sale to this day. An earlier project based on the work of Marcel Duchamp was also influential in the evolution of this project. This page and current project has no affiliation with John Cage, the John Cage Trust or the Marcel Duchamp estate.

Hoefler & Frere-Jones - Type Foundry

Since 1989, Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones have helped some of the world's foremost publications, corporations, and institutions develop their unique voice through typography. Their body of work includes some of the world's most famous designs, typefaces marked by both high performance and high style.

In 2004, The Hoefler Type Foundry entered its sixteenth year as Hoefler & Frere-Jones. H&FJ continues to work with brand leaders in every sector, developing original typefaces and licensing fonts from its library of nearly 1,000 designs, and it publishes fonts exclusively through its New York sales office and its web site at typography.com.

Foundries: Comicraft

Comicraft was founded by Richard Starkings and John Roshell in 1992, and together they are credited with pioneering digital lettering in the comic book industry. Today, Comicraft’s lettering methods and processes are now the widely accepted industry standard. The Comicraft studio’s clients include DARK HORSE COMICS, DC COMICS, MARVEL COMICS, IMAGE COMICS, MAD MAGAZINE, NICKELODEON, GRAPHITTI DESIGNS, VIEW ASKEW, SCHOLASTIC, TODD McFARLANE PRODUCTIONS and NBC, and their lettering and design work over the last fifteen years has earned them over a dozen comic book industry awards including the much coveted Eisner. The Comicraft foundry’s fonts have been featured in millions of comic books and magazines throughout the world, and have been featured in high profile movies including TOY STORY 2 and SKY HIGH as well as many children’s books, toy products, dvd and game packaging which have sought out Comicraft fonts to create an authentic comic book look.

Foundries: Emigre Fonts

Emigre, Inc. is a digital type foundry, publisher and distributor of graphic design related software and printed materials based in Northern California.

Founded in 1984, coinciding with the birth of the Macintosh, Emigre was one of the first independent type foundries to establish itself centered on personal computer technology. Emigre holds exclusive license to over 300 original typeface designs created by a roster of contemporary designers. Emigre's full line of typefaces, ornaments and illustrations is available in Type 1 PostScript and TrueType for both the Macintosh and PC.

Emigre is also the publisher of the critically acclaimed design journal Emigre magazine which was published between 1984 and 2005.

Jonathan Barnbrook's popular Mason fonts are now available in OpenType format.

The Mason OpenType fonts include the following features:
Alternates, Small Caps, All Small Caps, Proportional Lining Numbers, Superior Numbers and Scientific Inferior Numbers, Numerator and Denominator, and Arbitrary Fractions.

The OpenType format incorporates typographic features such as small caps, ligatures, old style numerals and lining numerals, all within one font file, thereby simplifying font management and usage. Do note that accessing these requires an application which supports OpenType typographic features such as Adobe InDesign 2 or Adobe Photoshop 6. OpenType font files are also cross-platform compatible; they work on both Macintosh and Windows platforms.
