The New Video Arcade in Spain Might Be the Movie Theater
"MADRID — For the last three years, Enrique Martínez has been toiling like a 3-D warrior to let the games begin.
The result is a hybrid movie theater with all the digital fire and fury of a video game: fog, black light, flashing green lasers, high-definition digital projectors, vibrating seats, game pads and dozens of 17-inch screens attached to individual chairs. And naturally, there’s buttered popcorn."

When Inconsistency becomes Consistent
It was a couple of hours into the judging process of the Type Directors Club TDC 53 competition that I saw the first cover of Metrópoli, a weekly supplement of the Spanish newspaper, El Mundo. Well, it was then that I saw the first five — then ten, and maybe more — covers of Metrópoli. I was initially attracted to the super tightly set egyptian slab typeface of the masthead in all its uppercase glory. As I sidestepped through the table to see the rest of the covers, the blocky letters mutated, distorted, adapted and genuflected to a dizzying variety of styles and tropes, of mannerisms and executions as the imagery — in this specific context, typographically-based imagery — changed completely from cover to cover. “Consistency”, as we know it, was clearly not the goal.

Diacritics: all you need to design a font with correct accents
"This website is based on the Wikipedia model for sharing information. Anybody could modify texts and pictures published on this website. ...When creating and placing accents, it is necessary to be aware of the fact that typesetting multiple languages may cause the various accents to appear together. That is why the accents must harmonize not only with the characters, but also with each other. When cutting a new face which supports multiple languages, the shapes of the accents should be standard and acceptable, rather than eccentric."

Making digital type is not the same as drawing a typeface
"The art and process of designing letterforms is a very creative task but it is not void of the rules and guidelines that govern good design. Any form of design is a solution to a problem or need. A good design is one that is appropriate for its use without any inappropriate features."

Jack, We Hardly Knew Ye
The little orange symbol on the shell of my cell phone has almost entirely worn off, thanks to years of jostling around in my pocket with loose change and keys. That abrasion is an apt symbol for the end of Jack, the Cingular Wireless logo.
